Tuesday the 12th of February, Day 3:
Our third day was another day at sea. We woke up and went for a jog on the top deck. The track was maybe 200 meters long, and was a little crowded with a lot of lounge chairs. It was also crazy windy up there. When we were running into the wind I felt like I was only at a walking pace, but was putting in as much energy as I would for sprinting. To my surprise, the fact that the boat was moving and rocking didn’t affect me as much as I thought it might. I got in about 2 miles!
We then of course had to try out the gym. The gym had a boxing ring, treadmills, a dance or yoga studio, and weights. Off to the weights! Beth seemed to be getting along much better than I was. I was just having such a hard time with the boat swaying around. I would easily start to lose my balance. What a crazy experience.
After lifting, we heading down to learn some origami with Lar. We must have gotten there a little late because they were just finishing up making little Yodas. We did however get to make some awesome dragons!
From the origami we ran off to a swing dancing lesson some of the Sea Monkeys were putting on. I think it once again proved that I have trouble feeling the beat. I felt like I kept speeding up the dance moves. Of course they did the standard thing of having everyone get into a large loop and then rotate. Which I think helped a little because each person was able to comment a little differently on things that I might be able to do better. I even got to dance with Aubrey from The Doubleclicks! But I would have liked to get to dance with my wife a little more. It was a lot of fun getting to dance, but I felt a little bad because a lot of people left early to grab lunch before the concert.
Today’s concert was with Mike Phirman, John Roderick, and Zoe Keatingl Mike was awesome, he did a lot of great jokes and some music based comedy. For example he also did this crazy “sampling” based song where he sampled a bunch of weird sounds from around the room and then built a song off of it.
John Roderick was not what I was expecting, not that I really knew what to expect. He told a couple stories, like about how to he stolen his dad’s airplane and nearly crashed it on the take off and landing. He then played some music. It was very mellow music that didn’t seem to be very geeky or nerdy. Just heart felt. Unfortunately, I had trouble listening to the lyrics, I was starting to get really tired. I blame the music on being too calming and awesome.
Zoe’s music as amazing! It was really hard to tell exactly how much she was doing. You just listen to it and it sounds like this crazy complex song, but it is only her up there. Apparently she has foot pedals that she uses to trigger certain events. Those might start or stop recording a sample, add a sample back into being played, etc. Unfortunately again It was putting me to sleep, the awesome music and the gentle the rocking of the boat.
At dinner we were made honorary Canadians so that we could eat dinner with Mike, one of the guys we went running with, and Stuart and Katie.
After dinner we headed over to listen to some of the karaoke. There were some people that were just amazing with how well they were able to sing. There was some stuff that was just “ok”,but all in all it was probably way better than anything I could do and was also a lot of fun. Back to the game room once more. There I played a couple hands of Flux with Derek, Victoria, Rae, Ray, Marshall, and Sarah. Yes there was another Derek on the boat. He spelled his name that same way and even weirder, his last name also began with an M.
It was then onto more origami with Lar. This time it was “naughty” origami…
The last thing of the day was heading over to watched a little of the Celebrity Artemis. It was interesting to see. It was also interesting since there isn’t much going on, the game screen is of a ship floating in space. Most of the entertainment value seemed to be the crew trying to understand what was going on and not really sure what to do. I am not sure exactly how to put it since when there is action and turmoil in the crew it is kind of fun. But the game doesn’t have much to “entertain” the audience. Artemis went late into the night, past what Beth and I could stay up for, so sadly didn’t get to see Wil captain the ship.
